Wireshark Filter: Capturing and Analyzing HTTP Content

As a network administrator, understanding how to capture and analyze Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) traffic is essential for troubleshooting and optimizing network performance. Wireshark, a free and open-source packet analyzer, provides a powerful toolset for capturing and analyzing network traffic.

In this article, we will demonstrate how to use Wireshark to capture and analyze HTTP traffic using the command-line interface and graphical user interface (GUI). We will also explore some of the key features and filters that can be used to customize our analysis.

Capturing HTTP Traffic

To start capturing HTTP traffic, launch Wireshark and click on 'Start' or press F5. This will begin capturing all network traffic on your system. To capture only HTTP traffic, we need to apply a filter. In the filter box at the top of the screen, type 'http' (in lowercase) and press Enter.

Analyzing HTTP Traffic

Once you have captured some HTTP traffic, you can start analyzing it in more detail. The first step is to expand the Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPV4) section to view IP details. You can do this by clicking on the plus sign (+) next to IPV4.

Next, observe the Destination and Source fields to see which devices are communicating with each other. In this example, the destination address is the IP address of an HTTP server, while the source address is your own IP address.

Wireshark Filter: HTTP Content

To view only HTTP traffic related to a specific connection, we can use Wireshark's filter feature. For example, if you want to view all traffic related to a connection with destination address 192.168.1.100, you can type 'ip.addr == 192.168.1.100' in the filter box and press Enter.
